[Journal of the American Medical Association December 1989] Dystrophin is a protein product of the Duchenne muscular dystrophy gene whose abnormalities are fundamental chemical defects that cause Duchenne and Bec-ker muscular dystrophy . Scientists have now linked specific types of dystrophin abnormalities to specific types of muscle immunohistochemistry. The research was supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute of Neurological and Stroke Research. Scientists at Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts and the National Institute of Neurosciences in Tokyo, Japan, have analyzed the malnutrition in muscle biopsy specimens of 76 patients with various neuromuscular disorders.
