  Beijing Drivers Launches
  ‘No Car Day’ Campaign
More than 200,000 members of Beijing’s driving associations are being asked to leave their cars at home at least one day a month in the hope of improving air quality in the capital city.
More than 100 Beijing-based drivers’ clubs jointly launched the campaign on Monday calling on local drivers not to use their cars for at least one day every month. Their goal is to ease traffic jams, reduce noise and improve air quality.
“I love driving, but I’m willing to make my contribution for more blue sky days in Beijing and for myself,” said Lu Chuan, a film director and a former environmental ambassador(大使) who helped raise public awareness of pollution issues in China.
Lu said he planned to make improvements to his car to make it more environmentally-friendly. He also plans to ride his bicycle and walk more often in the future.
There are more than 2.6 million motor vehicles in Beijing and the number is increasing by more than 1,000 a day, said Du Shaozhong, deputy head of Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau. Motor vehicle emissions(排放物) are the leading cause of Beijing’s air pollution, Du said. According to the city’s environment department research, Beijing’s vehicles spew(放出) out 3,600 tons of pollution each day.
The “no car day” campaign comes as Beijing tries to achieve 238 “blue sky days”, or days with fairly good air quality this year, five days more than last year.
Beijing launched the program called “Defending the Blue Sky” in 1998, when the city had only 100 days of blue sky.
While the city has seen a dramatic increase in the number of Blue Sky days by moving industry from the city and more stringent vehicle emission requirements, it still faces many challenges to improve its air quality. Most challenges focus on air pollution caused by motor vehicles.
The city has removed 4,000 old polluting buses and 30,000 cabs from service this year and replaced them with vehicles meeting new, more rigid state emission standards(标准).
The “no car day” was first introduced by 34 French cities that jointly launched the world first “no cars day” on Sept. 22, 1998.
  46. The following are the drivers’ goal except_____.
   A. to save more money
   B. to ease traffic jams
   C. to reduce noises
   D. to improve air quality
  47. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that______ .

   B. driving a car will do harm to people’s health
   C. Lu Chuan is a man who cares much for the environment
   D. there will be no pollution issues in China
  48. Some Beijing-based drivers decide to leave their cars at home one day a month_______.
   A. because the price of the petrol is very high
   B. because they want to make contribution for more blue sky days
   C. because their cars need to be repaired
   D. because they want to keep their body healthy
  49. Which of the following is the purpose of the passage?
   A. To encourage more Beijing drivers to contribute to Beijing’s environment.
   B. To persuade more Bejingese not to use their cars before 2008 Olympic games.
   C. To encourage more Bejingese to go to work by bike from now on.
   D. To tell us that Beijing’s air quality is being improved.

  Some suggestions about learning English!
We may all have heard about the old saying that interest leads one towards success. According to this saying, we’d better develop our interest in English at the very beginning of our study. To develop interest in your English study is not very hard. We may have the feeling of satisfaction and achievement from our English study when we find that we are able to say something not very complicated in English, or talk with foreigners in English. We will be amazed that the foreigners can understand our English and say “you speak good English”.
Plans are always very essential, so we must make some elaborate and workable(feasible) plans before we study. For example, you can plan to learn 20 new words every day. Once the plans are made, we should carry out these plans to the letter. Remember: Plans are essential, but those unattainable plans will make you feel frustrated!
Taking notes is one important technique in studying. Good memory can not replace the function of notes. Notes should be taken whenever we study. As we know, notes are the summarization, the core content of our understanding of the books that we read. It would be easier for us to remember the content by referring to our notes, which may be thinner than our books. Sometimes it would be useful to draw some tables, diagrams or illustrations that are very impressive, visual and concise. All these can help us in memorizing the content that we learn.
Watching English movies, English TV programs, listening to English songs and learn English on some special occasions are also excellent ways in learning English, as we may relate English to certain scenes so as to deepen our memory.
Once again for the learning of vocabulary: never just memorize single English words. If you only remember certain words, you still don’t quite understand their proper usage. Therefore, it is imperative that you learn by heart the whole sentences and the phrases that contain the new words so that we can know how to use the words in a proper way.

   B. Notes may be thicker than the book we read.

   D. Notes can help us in memorizing the content that we learn.
  53. Which is the best way in learning English words?

My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced: “Get up. You’re going with me to cut grass.”
The idea that my father actually thought I was big enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunup to sundown my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large yards in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was tired out, but I felt good. I had put in a hard day’s labor and had earned $6.
One day my father found some leaves I’d missed and pulled me aside. “Clear away these leaves,” he said firmly, “and don’t make me have to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I value the importance of doing a job right the first time. It will never fail to impress the person you are working for.
After two years my father told me and my brother that he felt we were old enough to do lawns(草坪) on our own. Every Saturday during our last two years of high school, we set out early in the morning with the same desire and drive we had gained while working under our father.
Taking care of lawns was not exciting or high-paying, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job is a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.
A newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live on a forty-hour-a-week minimum(最低的) pay. “My father’s never worked just forty hours a week, and neither have I,” I replied. “If you’re only working forty hours, you probably don’t want to do any better than you’re doing.”
In every job I’ve held from doing lawns to washing dishes, I have learned something that helped me in my next job. If you look hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.

   D. Missing things can be found out.
  56. How old might the writer be when he finished high school?

Many say their most painful moment is saying good-bye to those they love. After watching Cheryl, my daughter-in-law, through the six long months her mother suffered towards death, I think the most painful moment was waiting to say good-bye.
Cheryl made the two-hour trip over and over to be with her mother. They spent long afternoons praying, comforting, and retelling their shared memories.
As her mother’s pain intensified(加剧) and more medication was needed to ease her into sedation(入眠), Cheryl sat for hours of silent watching by her mother’s bed.
Each time she kissed her mother before leaving, her mother would tear up and say, “I’m sorry you drove so far and sat for so long and I didn’t even wake up to talk with you.”
Cheryl would tell her not to worry, it didn’t matter, still her mother felt she had let her down and apologized at each good-bye until the day Cheryl found a way to give her mother the same reassurance her mother had given to her so many times.
“Mom, do you remember when I made the high school basketball team?” Cheryl’s mother nodded. “You’d drive so far and sit for so long and I never even left the bench to play. You waited for me after every game and each time I felt bad and apologize to you for wasting your time.” Cheryl gently took her mother’s hand.
“Do you remember what you would say to me?”
“I would say I didn’t come to see you play, I came to see you.”
“And you meant those words, didn’t you?”
  “Yes, I really did.”
“Well, now I say the same words to you. I didn’t come to see you talk, I came to see you.”
Her mother understood and smiled as she floated back into sleep.
Their afternoons together passed quietly into days, weeks, and months. Their love filled the space between their words. To the last day they ministered to each other in the stillness, love given and received just by seeing each other.
Love is so strong that, even in this deepened silence that followed their last good-bye, Cheryl can still hear her mother’s love.
  58. According to the writer, what’s the most painful moment?
   A. Saying good-bye to those one loves.
   B. Losing one’s mother.
   C. Waiting to speak to those one loves.

   B. Because the doctor didn’t let her mother speak.
   C. Because her mother had to take more medicine and needed looking after.
   D. Because her mother was too painful to speak to her.
  60. Which of the following would be the best title for this text?
   A. Waiting to Talk B. To see You
   C. Cheryl’s Mother D. Mother’s Love

The western end of the factory was now on fire. And there, at one of the windows on the fourth floor, two men could be seen. For some reason or other they had been left in the factory after the rest of the workers had left. The thing was that they had not seen the fire approach. Now the two men stood there unable to get down as the staircase had been destroyed by fire.
Suddenly the crowd became silent. Mary and Margaret looked in the direction where everybody was looking. They saw some men on the window of the house opposite the burning building. The window frame had been taken out and a long ladder had been pushed out of the window, towards the burning building, across the Narrow Street. It was a sort of Air Bridge.
The crowd gave a loud shout as one of the men stepped out of the Window onto the ladder and quickly went towards the burning factory. He got over and jumped into the other window.
“There he is again!” shouted the people when they saw him out on the ladder with an unconscious(失去知觉的) man on his shoulders.
“It’s Jem Wilson!” Margaret cried out. Jem moved slowly, the ladder shook under him. The people watched him, holding their breath. At last he reached the opposite window and a loud shout went up from the crowd.
