In the development of Barrett’s esophagus (BE) epithelial dysplasia and adenocarcinoma, the incoherent proliferation of cells and the decreased expression of differentiation markers were observed. Epidemiological studies have shown that the esophageal acid exposure time of BE patients is significantly higher than those of patients with esophagitis and normal controls, suggesting that acid reflux plays an important role in the occurrence and malignant transformation of BE. The relationship between differentiation, hyperplasia, and dysplasia in BE biopsy specimens was investigated and the role of pH normalization in the esophagus in altering the BE phenotype was explored.
