With China’s accession to the WTO, our economy will participate in international economic cooperation and division of labor on a larger scale and at a deeper level and will move into a fast-track development. This will have an important impact on the work of trade unions, especially the safeguarding of workers’ rights and interests. The amended “Trade Union Law” considered and passed by the Standing Committee of the Ninth NPC clarifies that it is the basic function of the trade union to safeguard the lawful rights and interests of employees. It should be noted that from the past, the four functions of construction, participation, education and maintenance to the maintenance of basic functions now are to reorient the work of the trade unions after China’s accession to the WTO.
