此书收《王文成公全书》卷二,即《传习录》中篇,系阳明重要论学书札之一。《阳明年谱》载此书于嘉靖五年丙戌条下,谓“八月答聂豹(文蔚)书。”按《阳明年谱》嘉靖三年甲申条记:“十月,门人南大吉续刻《传习录》。《传习录》薛侃首刻于虔,续刻于越。”钱德洪《传习录》中篇首序云:《答聂文蔚》之第一书属“元善(南大吉)所录之旧,”钱氏仅照此移录。故此书不可能成于嘉靖五年,只能成于嘉靖三年十月以前。此书已倡致良知,《年谱》正德十六年辛已条云:“是年先生始揭致良知之教。”故此书又当成于正德十六年以后。
