德勒兹从微观视角出发,放弃了马克思以生产力或人的生存状况为人类社会划界标准的立场,根据欲望的运作机制及管理方式把人类社会划分为原始的领土机器、野蛮的专制机器、文明的资本主义机器三个阶段。领土机器是一种组织结构较为松散的社会集团,用大地作为管理欲望的手段,记录着生产对象以及生产方式。专制机器用抽象的符号取代大地的符号,启用了全新的编码体系及登记方式,对欲望实行超编码操作,这构成了国家的本质操作,法律是超编码的工具。资本主义机器通过吸取欲望流的剩余价值获取利润,资本的本质可以描述为数学意义上的微分关系。“欲望社会形态”思想某种程度上承继了马克思的社会形态理论,可以解释当代资本主义出现的新情况。
