In the ancient literature, there are often the words of Jiangnan, Jiangdong, Jiangzuo and Jiangzi, which have different meanings in different historical periods. If we can pay attention to differences, it will help us to understand the content of the works. Jiangnan generally refers to the area south of the Yangtze River, but its meaning is different in different periods. The Spring and Autumn Period, the Warring States Period, and the Qin and Han Dynasties generally refer to the south part of the Yangtze River in Hubei Province today, along with Hunan and Jiangxi. Modern times refer specifically to southern Jiangsu and Zhejiang. The Yangtze River flows from southwest to northeast from Wuhu to Nanjing. Before this time, it was the main ferry site from north to south. Therefore, it is customary to refer to the south bank of the Yangtze River as Jiangdong. During the Three Kingdoms Period, Jiangdong was the base of Sun Wu, and it was customary at that time to refer to the entire area under Sun Wu rule as Jiangdong.
