Archaeological work in the Beijing area began in the 1920s, and has gone through its starting, initial, slowly developing and vigorously developing stages. Since the founding of New China,lots of scientific excavations and studies have been made in the Beijing area. The rich achievements include the discovery and excavation of the large-sized Liulihe, Shangzhai and Zhenjiangying sites and Han period tombs at Dabaotai and Laoshan, as well as the establishment of a sequence of archaeological cultures for the area. In the future, the focal point of the work should be laid on the excavation and study of major projects and the cultivation of talent.
