After analyzing the overview of high-power oscillators operating in the 20 GHz and beyond bands, this article addresses this particular area of special attention, the hot cathode empty tube, which operates at voltages below 200 kV and in particular the “ ”. Then we introduce the research and development plan of gyrotron currently underway by Thomson-CSF's tube division, focusing on computer aided design (CAD). The selection of superconducting magnet program also made a discussion. Finally, mention is made of devices operating above the band of 200 to 300 GHz. In particular, the possible advantages of using horizontal interactions instead of vertical interactions are discussed. Of particular interest at higher frequencies may be devices that incorporate a miniature electron accelerator into the same vacuum enclosure and operate at lower voltages.
