April 23, 2008 Wayne McNee, Executive Director of the Fisheries Department, announces that New Zealand is implementing a package of measures to better manage the environmental impact on the high seas caused by the use of bottom trawling by New Zealand fishermen. In establishing the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO), New Zealand agreed to implement a set of interim measures for resource conservation and management. The SPRFMO will be an international agreement that will govern the environmental impact of fishing and fishing of non-tuna species in the high seas of the South Pacific and Tasman Sea (any part of the State Oceanic controlled area).
