湘江,湖南省最大的河流,流域面积约占全省面积的十分之四。它源出广西兴安,经衡阳、湘潭、长沙到湘阳濠口入洞庭湖,长817公里。中游东岸的株洲市,拥有选煤、电力、治炼、机械、麻纺等工业,是湖南省新兴的工业城市。但是,浩荡的湘江上自古没有桥,却使株洲的发展受到了极大影响。解放三十多年来,两岸人民隔江相望,不得不靠轮渡交往,或绕行百里之外的长沙、湘潭,每年仅此经济损失就达数百万元。特别是阻塞了株洲经济对外开放搞活。从1951年建市,株洲的每届市长、每一代市民,都朝思暮想着有朝一日建一座大桥跨越湘江。
Xiangjiang River, the largest river in Hunan Province, has a watershed area of about four-tenths of the province’s total area. It originated from Xing’an, Guangxi, and 817 kilometers from Hengyang, Xiangtan and Changsha to Xiangyang. The Zhuzhou City on the east coast of the middle reaches has industries such as coal preparation, electricity, governance, machinery, and hemp spinning, and is an emerging industrial city in Hunan Province. However, there is no bridge on the mighty Xiangjiang River since ancient times, but it has greatly affected the development of Zhuzhou. In the more than 30 years since the liberation, the people on both sides of the strait faced each other across the river and had to rely on ferry exchanges, or circumnavigated Changsha and Xiangtan outside of Baili. The annual economic loss alone amounts to several million yuan. In particular, it has blocked Zhuzhou’s economic opening up and invigoration. From the establishment of the city in 1951, every mayor of Zhuzhou and every generation of citizens thought that one day a bridge would be built to cross the Xiang River.
