英国波兰裔小说家约瑟夫·康拉德是一位自身充满矛盾的作家。康拉德的创作延续了英国帝国冒险故事的传统,作品富有浓郁的帝国冒险故事的色彩,如异国风情、海外冒险、帝国伟业、殖民贸易等。然而,在帝国冒险题材的表象之下,康拉德以跨文化的叙述视角,变革了帝国冒险故事的传统叙述模式,改变了帝国传奇故事的内涵,挑战了帝国的伟大文学传统。通过这些帝国冒险故事,康拉德叙写帝国的不安与衰弱,描述了殖民者的孤独焦虑、堕落无能和恐惧疯狂的心路历程,质疑了帝国有理、殖民正当和白人至上的思想。
Joseph Konrad, a British Polish novelist, is a self-contradictory writer.
