The concept of earth has been usually excluded and neglected in today s discussion of "heaven and humanity in oneness"(天人合一).Earth is a pivot concept in early Chinese philosophy indeed and could furnish nourish resources for the reinterpretation of contemporary philosophy. In this essay, I will investigate the origins of the expressions and concepts of "heaven, earth and humanity" (天地人) and "heaven and humanity"(天人), respectively, and clarify two senses both concepts connote, i.e., the political sense and the individual ethical sense.I will further argue that both"heaven, earth and humanity" and "heaven and humanity" were more discussed in political sense than in individual ethical sense, and the concept of " heaven and humanity in oneness" in contemporary studies has been more discussed in individual ethical sense. This study also demonstrates that "earth" in early China was always an essential concept not only in environment philosophy but also in political and ethical philosophy.
