Ten of Semi-wild Dulong cattle (mithun, Bos frontalis) were brought to cattle barn in Academy of Grassland and Animal Science from the mountainous area of Dulong Autonomous County in the northwest of Yunnan Province for domestication.During 7 month, 4 out of 10 Dulong cattle domesticated but 6 died from rejection of feeding.we induced superovulation using FSH and recovered embryos from 4 Dulong cattle and 10 Red Angus as controls.The average number of corpus luteum, ova and transferable embryos were 7.40±6.11, 6.40±5.93, 2.00±1.22 for Dulong cattle, and6.50±4.33, 5.00±4.82, 2.89±1.00 for Red Angus, respectively.There was no significant difference between two groups (P>0.05).Pregnancy rates were 66.7% (N=2/3) for Dulong cattle and 44.4%(N=4/9) for Red Angus after transferring the embryos to BMY (1/2Brahman, 1/4Murray Grey and1/4Yunnan Yellow) recipients.Three Red Angus calves were born from 4 recipients, whereas 2recipients which were transferred of Dulong cattles embryos aborted by 3-month pregnancy.This finding might have been explained by the difference of chromosome numbers between Dulong cattle(2n=58) and BMY cattle (2n=60).In this study, we succeeded the domestication of semi-wild Dulong cattle ex situ and obtained the transferable embryos.The chromosome numbers of recipient cow could be successful embryo transfer.
