The homes for the elderly in Malaysia are provided by three main parties-the government(the Department of Social Welfare),the non-governmental organizations(NGOs),and the private sector.The public institutional care homes in Malaysia are categorized into three types namely residential care homes for the elderly,nursing care home for the elderly,and day care centers.The private sector provides profit-oriented institutional care and nursing homes for the elderly.These homes are catered mainly to those with relatively poor health and inmobility.It is obvious that there is a lack of an alternative form of housing on the aging landscape-the retirement village——in the current provision of homes in Malaysia.Generally,the term retirement villagerefers to a community of independently living people with associated facilities.The aim of retirement village is to provide a sustainable community to improve the well-being of older people.This paper reviews the characeristics of some existing community villages in various countries.It also suggests an examination of the needs and requirements of the Malaysian older peope to see whether they fit into the concept of a sustainable retirement village.It is suggested that a triangulation approach consisting of both quantitiative and qualitative methods is used for the purpose of this investigation.This proposed study is expected to have both theoretical and practical contributions.For the theoretical contribution,the results of the study will lead to a holistic model of sustainable retirement village in the Malaysian context.It could be further developed to generate a theory for sustainable built environment for the elderly.As for the practical contribution,the research findings will have implications on policy making pertaining to the provision of old age homes,urban planning,residential property industry,welfare of the older population,and societal and economic benefits.
