Kushen, the dried roots of Sophora flavescens Aiton, has more than 1800 years history of use in Chinese medicine to treat acute and chronic inflammatory diseases and cancers.Kushen alkaloids (KS-As) and Kushen flavonoids (KSFs) are the well characterized components while KS-As have been approved by SFDA in 1992 to treat cancer and hepatitis. In an effort to screen novel anti-tumor agents from botanicals, we identified more potent anti-rumor activities of Kushen existed in the KS-Fs instead of KS-As.In this report, we demonstrated that KS-Fs were able to inhibit the growth of a variety of human tumor cell lines in vitro.
