In recent years, a number of cities in China, including Beijing, have learned difficult lessons in urban flooding during the rainy seasons.More than 300 of China's 657 cities fail to reach the national standards for flood prevention in urban areas, and more than 90 per cent of older urban areas don't even meet the lowest criteria for flood prevention.One of the most effective measures to increase the efficiency of storm drains in cities would be to reduce the storm-water runoff and raise the levels of water filtration and conservation in urban areas.In 2014, to solve the problem of urban flooding and water pollution once and for all, the Chinese central government has decided to push forward the "Sponge City" program, which in part borrows the experiences of low-impact development from all over the world in recent years,especially from the United States and Canada."Sponge City" is based on low impact development principles, but is not only focus on low impact development.The "Sponge City" development can be applied to any climate and soil conditions, but it must be adapted to local conditions.Definitely, the "Sponge City" Development will help China to improve the urban stormwater management system and protect the urban water ecological system.However the "Sponge City"development is not a short-term program and there are many challenges ahead.For China, there is still a long way to go for the "Sponge City" development.
