It was recently proposed that in the hippocampus, slow gamma oscillations (~30-50Hz) in CA1 region were coherent with that in CA3 region, which were embedded into theta rhythm at specific phases.In this study,we introduced a novel measurement, cross frequency mutual information (CFIM), in order to determine the unidirectional phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) between theta and gamma rhythms from hippocampal CA3 to CA1.It was found that the power of slow gamma rhythm was nodulated by theta phase by means of modulation index.Furthermore, the CFIM index showed their unidirectional coupling with time lags, indicating that the PAC exhibited in CA1 might result from the information transmission of theta-gamma entrainment from CA3.Interestingly, the ubiquity of PAC phenomenon was diminished in C6 glioma rats.It suggests that slow gamma conveys information by theta rhythm for memory stores in the CA3-CA1 network associated with synapse plasticity.
