The maize vp-102 is a Mutator (Mu) induced viviparous mutant,which has white or pale yellow kernels sprouting before harvest.In this study,we reported the cloning of vp-102 gene by a modified digestion-ligation-amplification method (DLA).The results showed the insertion of a Mu9 transposon in the first intron of ζ-carotene desaturase (ZDS) gene.Previous study suggested that ZDS gene is likely the structure gene of viviparous9 (vp9) locus.However,these studies are ambiguous,it is hard to confirm the relationship between ZDS gene and vp9 locus.We have performed a allelic test between vp-102 and three vp9 lines and showed that vp-102 is a new allele of vp9 locus.Meanwhile,the molecular characterizations of these three vp9 lines were identified.The vp-102 mutant gene was introgressed into four maize inbred lines,which also showed viviparous phenotype and caused the loss of yield in the hybird ears from 7.69 %to 13.33%.
