Acute lung injury (ALI) and pulmonary hypertension (PH) are two wide-spread pathologies of diverse etiologies and afflicting millions of people worldwide,annually.ALI can by locally induced (e.g.,ventilation-,aspiration-or inhalation-induced) or systemically induced (e.g.,sepsis,trauma,multiple organ failure) and may lead to the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS),which,approximately forty years after its discovery,still carries 40-50% mortality.Recent genomic approaches have begun to identify genes that may contribute to the development of ALI or provide resistance to ALI.PH,whether genetic in nature or drug-induced,leads to right heart failure,is not amenable to early diagnosis and is difficult to manage pharmacologically.PH is the major cause for lung and heart/lung transplantations.
