Cytotoxicity effect of crude hexane, dichloromethane, and ethanol extracts obtained from the peel and crude ethanol extract obtained from the gel of Aloe vera (Linn.) Burm.f.was tested against human breast carcinoma (MCF-7) and African green monkey kidney (Vero) cell lines.Vinblastine sulfate salt was used as a positive control against MCF-7 and Vero cell lines.Neutral red uptake assay was used to evaluate the reduction of the viability of cell cultures, in the present and absent of the extracts. It was found that dichloromethane extract from the peel of A.vera gave high toxicity (CC50 369.619 μg/ml) against MCF-7 cell line but low toxicity (CC50 1,732.078 μg/ml) against Vero cell line. All of the extracts from the peel and gel of A.vera showed low toxicity against Vero cell line.Vinblastine sulfate salt showed the highest cytotoxicity against MCF-7 (CC50 0.594 μg/ml) and Vero (CC50 2.5-10 μg/ml) cell lines among all extracts tested in this study. The overall result indicates the promising baseline information for the potential uses of dichloromethane extract from the peel of A.vera as an anticancer agent.
