Poly(lactide) (PLA) is the most extensively studied biodegradable thermoplastics derived from renewable resources for commodity applications, due to its industrial implementation.PLA is characterized by excellent optical properties and high tensile strength. However, it is unfortunately rigid and brittle at room temperature due to its glass transition temperature (Tg) close to 55℃C [1].The use of PLA is therefore limited as it cannot fulfill the applications where high ductility and toughness are required. To improve the mechanical properties of PLA, a large number of investigations have been performed to modify PLA properties via melt blending with various toughening agents including plasticizers and rubbery polymers such as low modulus polyesters, linear elastomers, or cross-linked core-shell impact modifiers, which have been observed to impart high improvement of toughening in PLA [2, 3].While conventional plasticization results in the migration of the plasticizer and the embrittlement of the material, the mechanical properties of PLA blended with a rubbery polymer are highly dependent on the compatibility of the two phases [2, 3].Interestingly, reactive extrusion (REx) has proven to be an ecological, costeffective and versatile process to design novel and high performance bioplastics [4, 5].
