The effect of microwave, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and thermal pretreatment on biogas production of Pennisetum hybrid was studied under mesophilic conditions. The changes on physicochemical characteristics of pretreated samples were also investigated by conducting composition and FTIR analysis. The analysis of composition showed that hemicellulose and lignin can be selectively removed with NaOH pretreatment. The microwave and thermal pretreatment had no significant effect on the chemical composition of biomass. The slight increase in specific biogas yield was obtained from the NaOH (8%) and microwave (6%) treated Pennisetum hybrid. The average methane content varied from 46% to 57 %.The specific methane yields of 202.86±22.81 mL/g VSadded(34.39% increased) and 194.05±7.14 mL/g VSadded(28.56% increased) were obtained for NaOH and microwave treatedPennisetum hybrid, respectively. The results showed that NaOH and microwave pretreatment had positive impact on the specificmethane yields of Pennisetum hybrid.
