Low dielectric isotropic and anisotropic media such as non-polar solvents do not readily accommodate charged particles due to the long range of electrical attraction inherent in such systems. However, the charges that can be generated are not only sufficient for charge stabilisation, but can also result in novel condensed phase behaviour.By taking advantage of this effect it is possible to construct particle systems with very unusual interaction scaling, with applications in display technology, optical metamaterials and chemoresponsive sensors. We use a combination of dynamic and structural measurements on both microscale and nanoscale systems that exhibit behaviour not predicted by conventional DLVO theory.
