Analysis of surfactants is a common requirement of analytical and technical laboratories.Surfactants based on polyethoxylates are a significant class of surfactants, and include the non-ionic materials based on commercial alkylphenol polyethoxylates, designated as APnEOs, where n defines the number of ethoxylate (-CH2-CH2-O) units in the molecule.Technical samples of APnEO comprise a broad number-range of EO units, usually designated according to the most abundant ethoxymer (eg AP8EO may have a range of ethoxylate groups from 2-16, with 8 units being the mode of the distribution).The alkyl group may be a single alkyl moiety, such as may occur with octylphenol, or can be a complex alkyl group as might occur with nonylphenol, which comprises as many as 15+ nonyl isomers.
