虽然法兰克福学派各成员在大众文化批判的问题上有过争议和偏离,但这些争议和偏离都是暂时的;而且就这些争议本身的性质而言,绝不意味着对“批判理论”之基本宗旨的反叛,因此与当下对待大众文化的无批判的实证主义态度是有本质区别的。同时,法兰克福学派从未基于精英主义的立场对大众文化进行过批判。大众文化唯一需要批判的理由在于,以资本为统治原则的社会机制通过对大众文化的生产,不断遮蔽着大众文化的真理性本质,导致大众文化本身的异化。这种异化了的大众文化的异化本质,被阿多诺和霍克海默等人称作“文化工业”。
