Periodontitis is a chronic bacterial disease that gradually destroys the attachment of teeth to the alveolar bone.This infection remains common in all adult populations.An association has been found between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases but the pathogenic mechanisms are unclear.We work on the hypothesis that not only bacteria but also bacterial components are released from live bacterial biofilms growing in non-parenteral space on tooth surfaces below the gum line.The released free-soluble bacterial material can then translocate to blood circulation and persistently cause systemic proinflammatory effects related to development of atherosclerosis and its complications.
