As petroleum becomes scarcer and concerns about climate change increase, the need for transportation fuels from renewable sources is becoming more urgent. Thus far, commercially available biofuels include ethanol from corn or sugar cane and fatty acid methyl esters derived from vegetable oil or animal fats.To circumvent some of the limitations of existing biofuels, alternative fermentation-derived fuels are also being considered, including short chain alcohols, hydrocarbons produced from the isoprenoid biosynthetic pathway and microbial fatty acid derivatives.
