Comparative Study of Memorial Architecture Based on Recognition Experiments

  During the process of perception of a built environment,the users change the form of architecture into images and therefore result in their recognition of architecture.However,there is always a gap between the architectsdesigning concept and the usersrecognition,especially in memorial architecture.The Jewish Museum Berlin by Daniel Libeskind and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe by Peter Eisenman are the most important projects in memory of the Jews murdered in World War Ⅱ.In this paper,a recognition experiment combined with questionnaire survey is used in the comparative study of these two buildings.Firstly,the paper introduces about the designing background and intention to show the architectsinitial designing concept.Secondly,the recognition experiment and questionnaire survey help us explore the whole process of recognition,which includes the changes from architecture form into image and emotion of the users.Finally,based on the comparative study of these two memorial architecture projects,the paper tries to proposes some useful suggestions for the design of memorial architecture.
