The lifetime prevalence of depression is 10-15%.Depression is one of the leading causes for morbidity, mortality and disability worldwide.Management goal of depressive disorder is to treat to remission.Challenge of complete remission is seen in a reasonable percentage of depressed patients.Electroconvulsive therapy has been used in severe major depression and treatment resistant depression.Other neuromodulation techniques available for the treatment of depression include Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS).TMS and tDCS are non-invasive brain stimulation modalities, whereas DBS and VNS are invasive neuromodulation techniques with a possible role in treatment-resistant depression.TMS and tDCS have a relatively benign profile of side effects, when compared to other neuromodulation techniques.TMS seems to be a promising alternative to treat a wide range of depressed patients.Neuroablative surgery has also been used for severe chronic and resistant depression. Both invasive and non-invasive neuormodulation approaches contribute to the therapeutic armamentarium for health professionals, especially for the management of certain types of major depression.
