A novel electrochemical crystallization method was developed to remove and recoverphosphate from a high strength wastewater such as livestock and industrial wastewaters. A rise in pHaround cathode by electrolysis of water stimulated crystallization of a large part of soluble phosphate, ammonium, magnesium and calcium in the electrolytic cell. Both of magnesium ammonium phosphate(MAP) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) could be produced by the electrolysis. The efficiency of MAP formingwas remarkably enhanced as magnesium was added directly to the cell. The experimental results showedthat the electrochenucal crystallization method was useful for removal and recovery of phosphate from thehigh strength wastewater.
