To improve confidence in regional projections of future climate,a new dynamical downscaling (NDD) approach with both GCM bias corrections and spectral nudging was developed and assessed in this study.GCM biases were corrected by adjusting GCM climatological means and variances based on reanalysis data before the GCM output was used to drive a regional climate model (RCM).Spectral nudging was also applied to constrain RCM-based biases.Three sets of RCM experiments were integrated over a 31-year period. In the first set of experiments, the model configurations were identical except that the initial and lateral boundary conditions were derived from either the reanalysis data, the original GCM output,or the bias-corrected GCM output. The second set of experiments was identical with the first one except spectral nudging was applied. The third set of experiments included two sensitivity runs with both bias-corrected GCM data and nudging were conduced where the nudging strength was progressively reduced.
