With the initiation of rapid expansion, globalization and mega-projects,our cities are turning into homogenous, soulless and scarce of places.Organically grown public places in developing cities are increasingly regenerated to make substantial contribution to the messy vitality of populous urban hubs.Regeneration of cultural areas are often occupied an ambivalent position, being characterized as either an essence of the indigenous development or a controversial new development to meet various aspects, especially economic demands. However, some recent examples depict that the historical environment is a major document which demonstrates and reflects cultural identity. It is necessary to both protect and regenerate heritage areas and to integrate them to urban environment for sustainability.Regeneration of old public places requires strong synchronicity with its origin to keep up cultural identity. However, this is not yet well documented to what extend the characteristics of the original development could influence the regeneration. The research attempts to frame up a process of urban regeneration. The framework has been evolved from a careful synthesis of a number of implemented regeneration projects. And the innovation added through a method,"Spatial Analysis",which entirely depends on the space quality and architectural characteristics of any cultural development. And the process found expression through the regeneration of a uniquely characterized and historic market place namely Nilkhel Book Market, located in the Dhaka,Bangladesh.More specifically,it is an investigation of spatial characteristics of an organic development in order to re-evaluate their potential to consider them as a tool for culture lead regeneration. The existing marketplace has been analyzed from different aspects of spatial characteristics, thereafter,a re-design approach is presented to document a design process of culture lead urban re-generation.
