Three anti-cyclonic eddies (ACE1-3) in the basin and a cyclonic eddy (CE2)in the western South China Sea was studied in summer 2007.All three anti-cyclonic eddies displayed similar TChl a concentration and phytoplankton community structures,which were dominated by Haptophytes_8,Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus.In the ACE1,there were more Diatoms,Prochlorococcus and Haptophytes_8 than in the other two ACEs,which might be induced by the nutrients from the extension of Hainan Island shelf.Nevertheless,the biomass and community structure was different between the edge and center of eddies under the comparing with the reference.2.6-fold and 3.5-fold in TChl a biomass compared to reference were accelerated for the centers and edges,respectively.For the cyclonic eddy,although the TChl a concentration at the deep chlorophyll a maximum layer (DCML) of the eddy was similar to the reference,there were ~30% increasing in the TChl a biomass at eddy euphotic zone integration.
