In order to investigate the formation of shear band in methane hydrate bearing sediments(MHBS),an elasto-plastic constitutive model is utilized to conduct a series of triaxial tests on MHBS samples using the Abaqus software. The constitutive model is implemented into Abaqus using the user subroutine UMAT firstly, and rationality of the proposed UMAT is confirmed by comparing the consolidated drained element tests with Fortran element test results. Then the validated UMAT is adopted to simulate the characteristics of shear band of MHBS samples, and the weak element is set in the MHBS samples to simulated the influence of non uniform density on the deformation behavior of MHBS.At last, the simulation results are analized with emphasis on the characteristics of shear band. Results show that: 1)During the test, the shear band coalesce through the weak element and the inclination of shear band is 48°.2)The presence of shear band is the foreboding of element destruction.3)The shear band occurs before the peak shear strength and the width of shear band grows larger during loading.4)The bifurcation of the stress, volumetric response and stress path of elements within the shear band is more obvious during the tests.
