Silkworm excrement is the main waste in silkworm production,which can be turning into treasure bycomposting,but malodor pollution is a tough problem during composting.Previously,we have optimized aserious of technological parameters for silkworm excrement composting.With a combination of solid-phasemicro-extraction-Gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS) technique and other methodsof Chinese national standards (GB/T 18883-2002),more than 43 odor components produced during silkwormexcrements composting were identified and quantified,which have an impact on the olfactory senses.Volatileinorganic compounds (VICS) including ammonia (NH3),sulfur dioxide (SO2),and hydrothion (H2S) et al..Concentrations of the top three components (NH3,SO2 and H2S) exceeded human olfactory thresholds.Besides,level of total volatile organic compound (TVOC) was 0.0221 mg/m3; 5-Ethyl-2,2,3-trimethyl-heptane,2,2,4,6,6-5-methyl-heptane and 5-isobutyl-nonane totally accounted for 46.58% of VOCS (hydrocarbons,ketones,esters,terpenes and S-compounds).This study indicated that the malodor problem continued to be a significantproblem for silkworm excrement composting.And the construction of malodor fingerprint and quantificationmight provide the reference data for controlling odor pollution and the maturity evaluation of silkworm excrementcomposting.
