Ductile iron pipe systems, including pipes, fittings, joints and accessories, are widely used in water supply, but sometime are viewed as a traditional material. This paper intends to present the recent advances made in ductile iron pipe systems for water supply:Ductile iron pipe systems are now available in the current ductile iron diameters, and now also in the traditional plastic pipe dimensions with the new range Blutop Joint technology has made tremendous progress in term of design, gaskets material characteristics and performance, for non-restraint as well for restraint systems contributing to enhance the quality of water distributed Protection against aggressive soils has been radically improved with the new Zinc-Aluminium epoxy external coating which enlarges the field of use and the durability of ductile iron pipe systems and improves the contact with water New internal linings have been developed, including high density blast furnace cement mortar lining, and recently launched thermoplastic or thermoset linings Contributing to a sustainable development is a key driver of the progress of ductile iron pipe systems.Product design and ISO and EN Standards evolutions contribute to reduce the environmental footprint of water supply networks. And now, some new products are specifically dedicated to new energies like those used in hydropower stations These recent advances are reviewed extensively, with special reference to water supply projects under progress.
