Though considerable progress has been made in understanding the coding of and experience-dependent plasticity for sounds in Core auditory cortex, much less is understood about Noncore auditory cortical fields. This stems in part from the use of synthetic, and often behaviorally irrelevant stimuli to probe neural activity, since neurons in Noncore fields often respond poorly to such sounds.Species-specific communication sounds thus provide an advantage in understanding how the representation of sounds changes as one ascends the auditory cortical hierarchy. We have used ultrasonic vocalizations in mice as a tool to study such auditory cortical processing and plasticity. Here we present results of our recent work to uncover how communication sounds are encoded along this hierarchy to enable a more categorical representation of their acoustically variable features. We find that neurons in mouse secondary auditory cortex show increased tolerance to acoustic feature variations in natural USVs,compared to Core auditory cortex. Moreover, this tolerance is further adapted by experience with USVs to become better matched to the prototypical features of behaviorally relevant vocalizations.Together, these results suggest that A2 plays an important role in transforming auditory representations into more categorical, behaviorally relevant representations.
