Respiration is the process by which all organisms obtain vital energy from a variety of reduced compounds, and represents the largest sink of organic matter in the biosphere.South China Sea (SCS) is a large marginal sea system located in low latitude and the planktonic community in SCS is dominated by small size phytoplankton,ie.,picoplankton.At the same time, prior research has revealed that SCS is most likely a source of atmospheric CO 2 (Zhai et al.,2005; Cai and Dai,2004),which might suggest a high respiration in the upper SCS.This study was thus sought to evaluate the importance of community respiration (CR) and its potential role in respiring organic carbon in the upper ocean of the South China Sea.
