Nickel, cobalt and manganese-based(NCM) cathode active materials of spent lithium-ion batteries contained valuable metals such as cobalt, nickel, manganese and lithium. In this work, valuable metals from the NCM cathode active materials of spent lithium-ion batteries was recovered by an environment-friendly one-step process using mixed organic malic acid and oxalic acid as leachant. The active cathode powder material was first leached with 2M C4H5O6(DL-Malic acid) + 5%v/v H2O2 solution at 80℃ and solid/liquid ratio of 5%wt/v during 120 min for the leaching of various metals.CoxNiyMnz precipitation was obtained by adding 0.5M C2H2O4·2H2O(Oxalic acid dihydrate) solution into first leached solution.Cobalt, nickel and manganese mostly existed into precipitated metal oxalate but lithium, aluminium, iron and copper did not be founded.Precipitated CoxNiyMnz oxalate was fabricated as the cathode active material after heat-treatment with the mixture of Li2CO3 at 800℃.The concentrations of various metal ions in the solutions were all determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy(ICP-AES).Precipitated CoxNiyMnz oxalate was characterized by x-ray photo photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).
