Visual unawareness of bottom-up attentional capture by ocular singletons is considered as a hallmark of saliency based on V1 contribution.We reinvestigated the original question by considering the influence of luminance dimension,known to contribute to saliency pop-out,onto the interactions between ocular and orientation features by testing the hypothesis with both lines and Gabor patches stimuli.Our results demonstrated that line patterns yielded a significantly higher interaction of ocularity and orientation dimensions than Gabor patterns,and importantly that stimulus strength(line luminance/Gabor contrast)significantly intervened onto subjects performances and created a visible salient component.They suggested that the additional luminance attraction effects in line patterns did interfere with the attraction effects of ocular and orientation singletons.Gabor patterns results did not provide evidence of pure ocular singleton attraction effects,but instead also hinted toward the known stimulus strength contribution to saliency pop-out.With a proper experimental design,our study did not find behavioral evidence of ocularity driven saliency effects combined with visual unawareness,considered as a hallmark of V1-based saliency computation.
