Marine and freshwater phototrophic biofilms represent spatially as well as temporally heterogeneous communities in terms of biological activity and species composition. While light availability, hydrodynamic conditions, substrate characteristics and biotic interactions are known to influence meso-scale structuring of biofilm communities, much less is known about the extent of microscale patchiness in available resources and its effect on species behavior and local species co-existence in such biofilms.
