Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are thought to be associated with many forms of apoptosis and cell death occur in diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, diabetes, etc.ROS consist of free radicals such as superoxide (O2), hydroxyl (·OH) and nonradical species such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydrochlorous acid (HOCl), which are particularly unstable and will react rapidly with biological macromolecules including proteins, lipids, carbonhydrates, DNA and RNA.Oxidative stress or tissue injury ensues when ROS quantity exceeds local antioxidant capacity.
