  The brick-and-mortar structure found in the abalone shell (nacre), which consists of ~95 vol % hard aragonite platelets and ~5 vol % soft biopolymer, is regarded as a model tough/light natural material to mimic.Several methods have been employed in this purpose, but achieving low organic compositions similar to that of natural nacre still remain difficult.Since the properties of a composite material are tightly dependent on the nature of its components, the volume fraction of each component and their arrangement to form the materials micro-structure, new composite materials with novel properties can be obtained by combining different components and/or by changing their organic/inorganic composition ratio.
