Necrosis, apoptosis and autophagy are the three principal modes of cell death mechanisms.Traditionally, necrosis is often viewed as an accidental and the unregulated cellular event.However, it is becoming increasingly realized that necrotic cell death may be executed in a regulated, caspase-independent manner and shares characteristics with both necrosis and apoptosis, termed"necroptosis".Increasing evidence indicates that necroptosis contributes to the pathogenesis of various diseases, including ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative disorders.Apoptosis, autophagy and necrosis, the major cell death processes, are interlinked and contain many common regulatory mechanisms.
