Male cicadas are particularly known for their loud acoustic signals which have an important role in different behavioral contexts, in particular in attracting the stationary females for mating (Claridge 1985).The main method of sound production in cicadas is the timbal mechanism which has been extensively explored (Fonseca & Bennet-Clark 1998).Besides the timbals, peculiar stridulatory systems have also been found in a few cicadas (Duffels 1993; Moulds 2005).However, bioacoustics on these remarkable cicadas has been almost uninvestigated. We investigate the sound production and associated behavior of a rare and remarkable cicada, Subpsaltria yangi Chen, whose males and females possess stridulatory organs, based on analyzing information on the morphology of the stridulatory organs, acoustic signals and behavioral observations.
