The mercury concentrations in hair samples from 177 coastal residents in Hainan,South China were investigated to assess the status of mercury exposure associated with sea fish consumption.Concentrations of THg in hair ranged from 0.057 to 4.81 μg/g with a median of 0.677 μg/g.Fishermen had significantly elevated hair mercury levels in comparison with students and other general public. The concentration of THg in hair was significantly correlated with fish consumption. Moreover, hair mercury levels increased with age,but no significant association of hair mercury was found with the gender, weight and height.
