Gram-negative bacterial pathogens deliver virulent effector proteins into host cells through specialized protein secretion systems, such as type Ⅲ and Ⅳ secretion systems. The injected effectors often harbor novel enzymatic activities and catalyze unique post-translational modifications on host key signaling molecules to activate or inactivate the host signaling pathways for bacterial infection and multiplication.
