Research on biological control was intensified in the 1970s.Especially antagonistic fungi belonging to Trichoderma, a few species from the genus Gliocladium and bacterial strains of Agrobacterium, Bacillus and Pseudomonas came into focus.Traits like mycoparasitism, antibiosis, root colonization and cell wall degrading enzymes in biocontrol interactions were addressed.Later, induced disease resistance was taken up in biocontrol research. In a Nordic program 1990-1994, several thousand fungi and bacteria were screened for biocontrol of Fusarium foot rot using an ecological screening procedure.
