Though topological insulators (TIs) are started from 2D case, the experimentally confirme number of 2D TIs is much smaller than that of 3D TIs.2D TIs can support the quantum spin hall effect (QSHE) with helical edge states, whose back-scattering is prohibited by the time-reversal symmetry and can serve as "two-lane highway" for dissipationless electrons transport.
